The symbolic use of the OPPOSITES: Night/winter (Mystery and Darkness) versus Dawn/Spring (Light, Open ness, Freedom, Independence) is Universal in communicating cultural differences. The past Russian Era which the building symbolizes (Stalinistic Architecture) is quite different from the current direction of the Russian Architecture. Cultural thoughts of different Societies can be communicated by these opposites. The idea of REFLECTIONS communicate the story of the past and present. This concept is an attempt to reflect on product of a past Era and the current through the form of a reflecting Sculpture.
Reflections of the past and the present. The reflections of the PAST are realized by the distorted images of the Ukraina Hotel and the Sky above seen from the Hotel suites. The reflections of the Hotel guests/ PRESENT are realized on the Hotel lobby, looking up to the entryway.
By giving a FREE FORM to the entry way, the form becomes an opposing form to the Existing Stalinist Architecture, but by reflecting the environment, the building and the Visitor, the freeform object then becomes more of an INTIMATE entity.
This object that is created will transform the Existing Architecture , reduce the confrontation and create an intimate scale under the Gateway. On top- it creates a FLUSTER with the Individual panels creating one thousand reflections, thereby creating a 'distant' appeal.
