The Lima Art Museum (MALI) announced the launch of an open competition for the design of its new contemporary art wing. The project was to include new gallery spaces, a library, classrooms, workshops, a café, a public plaza, access to a future metro station, and a landscape proposal for the park where the museum is located. Our goal was to establish the MALI as a new civic and cultural platform in the city, as well as a referent for future projects regarding the design of public spaces in Lima.
As a result of recent Economic developments at Lima, the city constructs have undergone a vast number of changes. As noted in the brief, there has been a strong favouring of private needs over public needs that has resulted in the city relinquishing a lot of public space. Parts of Public spaces that was once intended for the public recreation or similar activities has now been turned into roads or other similar infrastructural expansions, due to the developments.
The Lima musuem contemporary Art wing competition is a unique opportunity to re-vision this negative trend which will only make the city more dense in the future.
Our primary vision for the contemporary Art museum is to create an Architecture that gives back to the city the space that it takes to build the museum. Considering the prime location and study of the context, it is Ideal for the museum to act as a BRIDGE to connect the metro to the park also as a way of performing as a sculptural garden while it per- forms as a bridge. On the other hand, our design focusses on creating an Iconic contemporary design that can emu- late the significance of Peruvian contemporary Art at a Global scale.
Our project is a response to the Urgency of creating public spaces that has been neglected in the past.
